The new Legalise Cannabis WA (LCWA) party is striving towards 500 members by December 31st.
There's a new pro-cannabis political party forming in Western Australia just in time for the state election on March 13, 2021. The Legalise Cannabis WA (LCWA) is Australia's second pro-cannabis political party.
LCWA is aiming for 500 WA-registered members by December 31, 2020. It is the hope that the LCWA will be a registered political party in time for the state election.
The party is, however, optimistic based on success of sister political party, Legalise Cannabis Queensland (LCQ). LCQ was formed earlier this year and ran in 23 electorates in the Queensland state election in October 2020. After only registering one month before the election, the LCQ gained 5% of the vote in some electorates and 3-4% in others.
According to HEMP, LCWA member Gail Hester, writes that they are being realistic about the outcome. They are hoping to "secure one or two seats" across the upper and lower houses. The objective of the party is to create a legal political platform for voters who support legalisation.
It would be nice to give the voters who support Cannabis the opportunity to vote for a Party who reflects their will in the privacy of the ballot box at state level.Gail Hester – LCWA member
Hester continues to say that there is a need to show how many voters "want an end to the drug war and to prohibition in WA."
In addition to the newly formed pro-cannabis company, WA is also in the midst of a medicinal cannabis boom. Perth-based company Little Green Pharma (ASX:LGP), received a grant in August for $300,000. The grant will go towards the construction of a medicinal cannabis manufacturing facility in the Southern West part of the state.
Furthermore, MGC Pharmaceuticals (ASX:MGC) are working with Notre Dame University to test the drug CogniCann on dementia patients. The trial is being conducted on 50 patients in aged-care facilities across Perth. The results will be available at the end of Q3 2021.
As it stands, according to the National Drug Strategy Household Survey, 41% of Australians favour legalisation. This is an optimistic increase from 37% in 2016.
