A new survey by Morning Consult found that UFC and E-sport fans are the biggest consumers of cannabis, while Golf, Baseball and Football fans were the least likely to consume marijuana products.
Over the past few years, cannabis use has become more acceptable among professional athletes and within sporting institutions. The NBA, NFL and MLB have all loosened their stances on cannabis use, and the UFC is pouring millions into researching the benefits of CBD.
And, as the medicinal benefits to marijuana and CBD use continue to pile up, including the potential to reduce traumatic brain injuries and inflammation, athletes are beginning to consider cannabis as more of a performance enhancer than an intoxicant.
Now, a new survey of sports fans by Morning Consult has found that certain sports are watched more frequently by stoners. The survey polled up to 1,200 self-identified sports fans from each sport, and found that both UFC fans and eSports fans were the highest consumers of marijuana and cannabis products. In both categories, 35% of respondents reported that they smoked or ingested marijuana "often or sometimes."
On the opposite end of the cannabis-use spectrum were Golf and MLB fans, who were the least likely to consume cannabis products, of which 22% and 20% respectively reported ingesting or smoking marijuana often or sometimes.
Currently, there are hundreds of ongoing studies that are looking into the efficacy of cannabis, marijuana, and CBD formulations for various ailments, in addition to CBD companies continuing to team up with sports companies.
As such, the increasingly anachronistic perceptions of cannabis users as being disheveled and dazed like Cheech and Chong or 'The Dude,' may need to soon be expanded to incorporate professional fighters and high-level athletes.
