Sleep is super important in maintaining how we function and perform. Bad sleep, or no sleep at all, is detrimental to both our physical and mental wellbeing, yet insomnia affects a large population of people worldwide.

We currently find ourselves in the most stressful of times and for a lot of people that uncertainty can keep them up at night. But could cannabis help? Its stress-relieving properties are well documented, but many medical consumers utilise the plant as a sleep aid as well.

With so many strains out there, it can be tough to figure out which ones are the most helpful in getting a good night's sleep. Typically it's indica strains that are recommended, but there are a few hybrids out there that can help as well. Here's three strains that just might help you catch those Z's you've been chasing.

Original Glue

Original Glue (aka Gorilla Glue or GG4) is a hybrid strain developed by GG Strains. Rather than having just two parents, Original Glue is an intriguing combination of three different strains called Chem's Sister, Sour Dubb and Chocolate Diesel. This is one of the most popular strains in the world and is well-renowned for its potent blend of effects, including euphoria, physical relaxation and sedation.

Original Glue's high THC content plays a big part in why this strain is so popular in the cannabis community, and mainly amongst more experienced consumers. The average range of this strain's THC content is anywhere between 18-22% THC, but some strains have even registered up to a whopping 28% THC. While veteran cannabis consumers enjoy this high THC content due to the heavy-handed euphoria it induces, novice consumers and anyone sensitive to THC should exercise caution.

It doesn't take long for this strain's uplifting effects to be felt after consumption. Feelings of happiness and euphoria come on strongly and can often lead to developing a case of the giggles. Accompanying these cerebral effects are equally potent body effects, such as physical relaxation and strong sedation. Once this relaxation sets in mental clarity can be hard to achieve however, this is often the desired outcome for some consumers.

Original Glue isn't just for veterans, it is also a popular choice amongst medical cannabis consumers. The combination of its euphoric and mind-numbing effects work in tandem to make you feel better and help turn off negative thoughts. For this reason, this strain is popular for those managing symptoms related to conditions such as stress, depression, anxiety and PTSD.

This strain also has the ability to relieve pain as well as stress. The physical relaxation aids the analgesic properties of this strain, which can make mild to chronic aches and pains disappear. This strain also has the potential to manage pain related to arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.

One of the biggest conditions that this strain helps to manage is insomnia. Through its ability to induce strong sedation, this strain can battle insomnia directly by making it easier to fall asleep. It can also battle insomnia indirectly by managing other factors that contribute to insomnia and may cause difficulties falling asleep, such as chronic pain, anxiety and negative thoughts.

Flavour-wise, Original Glue is a wild time. While it has some nice aromatic notes, such as pine and chocolate, its flavour is a sour surprise. Chocolate and coffee can be tasted but these notes are almost entirely drowned out by a strong diesel flavour that can stick around in the mouth for hours afterwards.

Purple Punch

Purple Punch is an indica-dominant strain with mysterious origins. It is the combination of two classic indica strains in Larry OG and Granddaddy Purple. This strain is a standout due to its deep purple buds and fruity flavour, but that's not all. The THC and indica effects of this strain combine for a strong body and head high that can really pack a punch.

Purple Punch has a THC content ranging between 16-20% THC, with most strains being closer to 20%. At 20% THC, this strain may not be as potent as other hybrid strains such as Original Glue, but it is still fairly strong. If a cautious approach isn't taken, or you take too much, you can end up feeling like you've been hit by a truck.

This strain hits you full force from the get-go with strong cerebral stimulation and euphoria. Due to the lack of sativa genes in this strain, this stimulation doesn't stick around for too long. Soon afterwards, the body high commences to balance out these cerebral effects. As with Original Glue, these body effects manifest as physical relaxation and strong sedation.

Purple Punch is popular with medical cannabis consumers who require stress relief, due to its mood-lifting effects which are felt instantly. These effects can also be helpful for those who are managing symptoms related to anxiety and depression.

The main medical application of this strain is managing insomnia. As with Original Glue, this strain is able to combat insomnia through strong sedation, allowing users to fall asleep more easily. While not its primary use, this strain is also helpful in managing pain, cramps, spasms, nausea and migraines.

Although this strain doesn't possess the same mind-numbing potency as Original Glue, the flavour is definitely an improvement. Purple Punch has a refreshing grape soda flavour which contains other tasty notes such as blueberry, vanilla and herbs. Vaporising this strain is the recommended method of consumption for the full fruity experience.

Do-Si-Dos

Do-Si-Dos is an indica-dominant hybrid strain cultivated by Archive Seed Bank. It is the combination of the potent indica Face-Off OG and OGKB, a GSC strain phenotype. This pungent strain has effects that seem to last longer than your average strain. These effects include sharp mental stimulation which is balanced by soothing physical relaxation.

Similar to Purple Punch, Do-Si-Dos has an average THC content of 20% THC, which ranges between 18-22%. As with the other two, this strain can be potent in high enough doses, so novice consumers should approach this one with caution.

Do-Si-Dos has psychoactive effects which can be felt instantly after consumption. This strain can provide a great headspace for introspective thinking, with thoughts flowing freely and quickly. This can also result in increased concentration and creativity. Although this can be intense for some consumers, the calming body high kicks in shortly after to stop the cerebral stimulation from becoming too overwhelming.

This relaxation comes on slowly to start and travels throughout the torso and limbs. While slow to start, this relaxation progressively gets stronger. Once relaxed, sedation also comes on strongly until you are ultimately left in a calm and immobilised state.

Do-Si-Dos' combination of effects lend themselves to some medical applications. This is an example of yet another strain that is able to relieve pain while increasing relaxation. These pains can be acute, chronic or related to inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. These anti-inflammatory effects are also helpful in relieving headaches, migraines and nausea.

The psychoactive effects of this strain can temporarily relieve symptoms related to stress and depression. Due to the intense and introspective thinking that this strain can inspire at the beginning of the high, it is not recommended for consumers who are prone to panic or anxiety.

Insomnia is the condition that this strain manages the best. While there is significant cerebral stimulation at the start of the high, once you push past this into the later stages, relaxation and sedation come on very strongly. As has been mentioned, strains that induce sedation strongly are helpful if you're experiencing troubles falling asleep. On top of this, a large number of consumers report using the strain as if facilitates a good night's sleep, resulting in them feeling well-rested the next day.

In terms of flavour, this strain has a pleasant one. Buds of this strain have a pungent floral aroma with a sweet and earthy taste. Notes of citrus and pine can also be detected in the smoke. This smoke can often be harsh and acrid, so vaporising is the recommended method of consumption for this strain as well.

While these recommendations may prove useful, doing further research is recommended to understand different cannabis strains and their effects. If you liked what you read about any of these strains, be sure to check out their strain profiles for more information.
