A recent Quinnipiac poll has found that 7-in-10 Americans believe marijuana should be made legal, which is a record level of support for the plant.
A little over a week ago, a Pew poll revealed that 60% of Americans supported recreational and medicinal marijuana legalization, with 31% favoring the legalization of marijuana for purely medical purposes.
Collectively, this demonstrated that 91% of Americans supported some form of cannabis legalization, which is the highest percentage of the population recorded.
Now, a recent Quinnipiac poll of 1,237 citizens has supported this data, finding that 70% of registered voters supported marijuana legalization.
While it isn't clear if the respondents voted for cannabis legalization in its entirety or for a specific form of cannabis (medical, recreational), the number still represents continued support for cannabis legalization among the U.S. population.
Moreover, similar polling from Gallup in November last year found that support for marijuana legalization had reached an all-time high at 68% in 2020, up from 66% in years prior.
Evidently, no matter which way you slice it, Americans are growing more open to marijuana legalization.
This likely follows the increased understanding of the harms brought about by the War on Drugs, the growing body of evidence to support the use of medical marijuana for certain ailments, and the economic benefits brought to states that have legalized adult-use cannabis.
To speak on the economic benefits of marijuana legalization, Illinois recently brought in $110 million in cannabis sales, putting the state on track to generate over $1 billion for the year from sales of the plant.
With a spate of recreational marijuana legalization occurring over the past few months across several U.S. states, the case study supporting cannabis will only grow larger and more prominent, and we can expect support for cannabis to continue to increase as a result.
