Elias Theodorou is a successful MMA fighter, having won the Ultimate Fighter in 2014 and many UFC fights. Recently, Elias became the first athlete to receive a Therapeutic Use Exemption for cannabis products.
Welcome to the eighth episode of The Green Fund's CannaCast! The CannaCast will feature pre-eminent figures within the cannabis space, whether it be entrepreneurs, doctors, chefs, or CEO's of cannabis companies, we will be speaking to the people that have made waves in the cannabis industry.
For this episode, we sat down with the "Mane Event," MMA fighter and actor Elias Theodorou. Having won the Ultimate Fighter in 2014, Elias went on to become a successful fighter in the UFC, all while suffering from neuropathic bilateral pain.
During his search for a treatment for his pain, Elias noticed the harms that first-line medications such as Vicodin did to his body, and so the fighter found his way to cannabis. Since then, Elias has been a vocal supporter of cannabis and has been advocating for the allowance of cannabis use among athletes for several years, which culminated in him finally receiving a Therapeutic Use Exemption for cannabis in February this year.
Unlike CBD, which has been legal within the UFC for several years, Elias has fought to allow athletes to access the full gamut of cannabis, in order to better capitalize upon the 'Entourage Effect' that occurs when CBD and THC are combined.
This means that Elias has set precedent for future fighters who seek to use cannabis and cannabinoid-related medicines as a tool for recovery, which may pave the way for athletes across the world.
