Kamala Harris's Marijuana Policy Is a"Half-Step"

On marijuana legalization, Kamala Harris stated that "this is no time for half steppin'." Though many critics believe she is doing precisely that.

The Democratic Vice President nominee, Kamala Harris, spoke recently at an event held by ABC News Live, in which she spoke on what her and Joe Biden's marijuana policy might look like.

During the discussion, Kamala Harris stated:

"Under a Biden-Harris administration, we will decriminalize the use of marijuana and automatically expunge all marijuana-use convictions, and end incarceration for drug use alone."

"This is no time for half-steppin', this is no time for incrementalism. We need to deal with the system, and there needs to be a significant change in the design of the system."

However, as we've addressed previously, the Biden-Harris administration's stated marijuana policy is precisely a half-step when compared with the previous Democratic candidates during the 2019-2020 primaries.

Virtually every candidate that vied to become President, excluding Joe Biden, favoured federal marijuana legalization. Comparatively, Biden seeks to only decriminalize cannabis, which would maintain the current federal illegality of the plant.

Moreover, Kamala Harris has watered down her own stance on cannabis legalization since being selected by Joe Biden to be the VP nominee.

Previously, Kamala Harris introduced the MORE Act (Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement), which seeks to remove cannabis from its Schedule I status and clear the records of those previously convicted of cannabis-related crimes.

Since then, Kamala has shifted her approach toward marijuana legalization to match Joe Biden's, which is one of decriminalization.

While this is certainly a step in the right direction, such a policy falls short of the expectations of many cannabis enthusiasts who hoped for federal legalization.

Given that Donald Trump recently spoke about how marijuana legalization can "supercharge" voter turnout, it remains unclear why the Biden-Harris Administration hasn't yet capitalized on this fact.
