A new Daily Beast article says that "the President believes that inclusion of marijuana initiatives on state ballots could supercharge turnout for voters who lean toward Democratic candidates and causes."
The Daily Beast writes: "the President and some of his team, already obsessed with the potential drop-off of various demographic groups that make up his battered coalition, have begun openly worrying that the drive to legalize or decriminalize marijuana might hurt him and fellow Republicans at the ballot box."
"According to two GOP strategists who've independently discussed the topic with Trump this year, the president believes that inclusion of marijuana initiatives on state ballots could supercharge turnout for voters who lean toward Democratic candidates and causes."
This is something we've discussed previously here at The Green Fund, which is that cannabis legalization could serve as a powerful tool for Joe Biden, should he choose to wield it. However, it seems the Biden/Harris campaign has decided to choose a more moderate tact, opting for cannabis decriminalization instead. In fact, there was zero mention of cannabis at the recent Democrat National Convention.
Though this "moderate" approach leaves behind the majority of Americans who support federal cannabis legalization.
Now, it seems even President Donald Trump recognizes this fact, however, Republicans have often been a party positioned against cannabis, rather than for it. Moreover, amid the ongoing unrest following several incidences of police shootings, Trump has positioned himself as the "law and order" candidate and opting to legalize cannabis may run counter to that perception.
Will Biden and Harris act upon the fears of Trump by taking up the marijuana mantle? Or will cannabis legalization take a backseat in the upcoming election?
