With continuous innovation in cannabis cultivation, there are numerous strains on the market for you to choose from. Thanks to modern techniques, breeders are able to pick and choose certain features and phenotypes to try and create the exact strain they want.

Some features that are often tinkered with are effects, flavours and aroma to try and create a strain that delivers a unique experience. But what happens when breeders turn the THC up to ridiculous levels in order to create a super potent strain? Our guide to 2020's most popular strains continues with the Bruce Banner Strain.

Bruce Banner is a sativa-leaning hybrid strain bred by Dark Horse Genetics. It is a cross between two popular hybrid strains in Strawberry Diesel and OG Kush. Named after the alter ego of the Incredible Hulk, this strain has more in common with the superhero than just green colouring.

It is an absolute powerhouse of a strain, possessing a level of super-strength that would make the Hulk proud. In fact, one of its phenotypes (Bruce Banner #3) is the most potent strain ever tested in the history of the High Times Cannabis Cup, registering a THC level of 28.35%.

While this strain can pack a punch, the high balances the sativa and indica effects well. If Bruce Banner is symbolic of the stimulating cerebral effects and the Hulk is symbolic of the hard-hitting physical effects, then this strain displays this dichotomy perfectly. The Bruce Banner strain is a fan favourite thanks to its potency, making it a popular choice for pain relief as well as pleasure.

Bruce Banner's THC content ranges between 20-25% THC, with an average of around 23% THC. Some strains have even registered as high as a whopping 30% THC. Obviously, this strain is stronger than your average hybrid strain (approx 18.3% THC) and is one of the most potent you can find on the market. As such, this strain is not recommended for novice cannabis consumers. There are no relevant amounts of CBD found within this strain.

This is a powerful strain with effects that come on quickly. The cerebral effects begin immediately after consumption with the heavy-handed euphoric effects triggering a lift in mood. Consumers will feel giggly, energetic and lively, while you can also experience a boost in creativity. This strain also enables introspective thinking which will fade away as the high progresses after the initial punch.

As the high begins to mellow out, profound euphoria and physical relaxation can be felt throughout the body. This strain is able to relieve stress and replace it with a calm buzz that doesn't leave users couchlocked. Alertness and focus are both maintained while in this tranquil state. Because of its ability to induce euphoria and relaxation while keeping your head clear, Bruce Banner is utilised as both a daytime and a nighttime strain.

Bruce Banner's strength and potency give this strain a fair few medical applications. It has strong analgesic effects that provide relief from chronic aches and pains, migraines and pain related to inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. The relaxation it provides can also provide relief from any muscle tension or spasms. Those who suffer from fatigue can also benefit from this strain's invigorating and energising effects.

Due to its mood-lifting effects, this strain has also been used to combat symptoms related to depression, PTSD and even bipolar disorder. Although this is one of the highest-THC strains in existence, it is somewhat remarkably not associated with increasing paranoia or panic and therefore can be suitable for the treatment of anxiety in small doses. Consumers that have an attention deficit disorder (e.g. ADD or ADHD) also find this strain helpful as it provides focus and increases concentration.

Appearance, Smell & Taste

Bruce Banner's buds are typically dense and absolutely covered in trichomes which produce a resinous coating. Both of these features contribute to the potency of this strain. These buds can have many different shades of green but are commonly bright and vibrant. Magenta hues can sometimes be seen, matching the fiery orange stigmas that protrude out of the buds.

Similar to its parent Strawberry Diesel, this strain also has a pungent diesel aroma. On the other hand, the OG Kush genetics contribute to some earthy and floral scents. Although this aroma is pungent and features strong notes, there are also some sweet and fruity undertones that can be detected, such as the smell of strawberries and candy. Some of the main terpenes that contribute to this interesting aroma are caryophyllene (spice), limonene (citrus) and myrcene (earthy).

The interesting elements present in Bruce Banner's aroma can also be detected in its flavour. This pungent strain has a sweet candy-like taste, packed with sweet berry flavours. Strawberry is the most prominent flavour thanks to the Strawberry Diesel genetics and a wild berry aftertaste can be felt lingering around upon exhale. These sweet flavours are balanced by subtle floral and earthy notes. Due to its appealing flavour, vaporising this strain is the recommended method of consumption for the full experience.

Bruce Banner was originally bred by the LA-based breeders at Dark Horse Genetics. They created five phenotypes of this strain, named Bruce Banner #1-5. Bruce Banner #2 and #4 were quickly dropped, but the remaining three stuck around with a reputation for being some of the most potent strains available. The most coveted and potent of the three phenotypes is Bruce Banner #3, which won first prize at the Denver Cannabis Cup.

Bruce Banner #3 is available in both seed and flower form from the Dark Horse Genetics website and their affiliated dispensaries. These are located in Colorado, California, Oregon and Washington. They also offer flowers of Bruce Banner #5.

This strain can also be found in dispensaries throughout the legal states of the US, Canada and in the Netherlands. In a North American dispensary, you can expect to pay around $12 AUD for a gram ($35 AUD for 1/8 oz) and closer to $18 AUD a gram in Europe.

If you want to dip your toes in before receiving the full force of Bruce Banner, then some other hard-hitting strains to try are Original Glue, White Fire OG, Wedding Cake and Sour Diesel.

With unparalleled strength that would rival the Hulk's, this strain is not one to take lightly. This reputation has given Bruce Banner cult status with all sorts of cannabis aficionados and heavyweights wanting to get their hands on it. In the future, we might see even crazier strains with THC levels we never thought possible but for right now, Bruce Banner reigns supreme.
